UNDERGRADUATE
Bachelor of Arts in English
Program Objective
The AB English Program aims to develop graduates who are effective communicators in English and who are fully equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to be able to engage in English language and literature teaching, research and other related jobs which require the competent use of English.
Outcome Objectives
Graduates from the program should be able to:
- Demonstrate competence in the use of English in different modes of communication.
- Demonstrate understanding and appreciation of different types of literature (genre-based, national, regional and world) and critically analyze them in terms of their literary and human values.
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the theories and approaches to teaching literature and English as a second language, including the use of information communication technology or Web 2.0, and draw insights for pedagogical applications in actual work settings.
- Conduct relevant studies in language, literature, teaching and related fields.
- Exhibit desirable and positive personal, social and cultural values.
Admission Requirements for Freshmen
The student should present the following credentials:
- High School Report Card
- SASE results cut-off scores stipulated by the English Department of the MSU
- Admission Form Retention in the Progam
For a student to remain in the program, he or she must earn a weighted average of 2.5 (for MSU IIT, 2.0 or better from the combined grades in English 1, 2, 3 and Literature 1). All students are subject to the institute-wide regulations on retention in the program. In addition, students may retake a course only once, after which he/she must pass the course to stay in the program.
Semestrial Load Requirements
No student shall enroll in a major course a semester earlier than its scheduled for offering. However, a group of at least 15 students can request for the offering of a course during summer if the course is a requirement for graduation during the subsequent semester.
GRADUATE
MASTER IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE STUDIES (Non-Thesis Program)
The MELS (Non-Thesis Program) is designed to upgrade the competence and skills of college English instructors who do not have the inclination or the time to write a thesis, or the required undergraduate degree to teach English but who have been teaching English by force of circumstance, or the financial means to pursue a Master of Arts degree in English.
Objectives
The MELS (Non-Thesis Program) commits to uphold the Institute’s vision, mission and objectives.
Specifically, the program aims to provide graduates with knowledge and skills to enable them to:
- upgrade their linguistic and discourse competence in English;
- apply appropriate approaches in teaching English and literature in a bilingual setting;
- undertake projects and studies in English language instruction and literature which are responsive to the peculiar needs of their communities.
Admission Requirements
Admission to the MA English Language Studies (Non-Thesis Program) requires:
- Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in any of the following:
- AB English
- BSE English
- BS Language Teaching
- BEEd English
Graduates of other degrees may be admitted to the program upon completion of at least six (6) units in the following undergraduate courses:
- English 50 Introduction to the Study of Language
- English 55 Descriptive Linguistics
- English 85 TESL (Theory)
- English 150 Survey of World Literature
- English 75 The Reading Process
This requirement may be waived if the applicant graduated with honors, or if he or he has been a full-time English teacher for at least two (2) years.

- Letters from two former professors certifying applicant’s capability to do graduate work
- Passing score in the English Proficiency Test
Degree Requirements
- Completion of 36 units of the course work with a grade point average of 2.00
- Passing the comprehensive examination in two areas: language and literature.
- Submission of a Special Project
A certificate of proficiency will be awarded upon completion of 21 units of course work.
MASTER OF ARTS IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE STUDIES
The graduate program leading to the degree of Master of Arts in English Language Studies aims to upgrade linguistic and professional competence in the areas of language program management, instructional materials development and research.
Objectives
- To develop linguistically and professionally competent teachers of English who can lead in language programs design and management.
- To expose them to various approaches in teaching language and literature and provide them with the opportunity to choose, modify or adapt those which are relevant to teaching English in a bilingual setting.
- To provide them with the background needed to pursue research in English language studies and to contribute to the existing body of knowledge in their field.
DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN LANGUAGE STUDIES

Objectives of the Program
General:
The program for Ph.D. in Language Studies aims to cultivate in the teachers a scholarly attitude toward their profession so that they can contribute to the advancement of knowledge.
Specific:
In specific terms, the program aims to achieve the following objectives:
- To increase the teachers’ knowledge of research strategies in language, literature and communication to enable them to pursue research and contribute to the existing body of knowledge in their field.
- To expose the teachers to various issues in language, culture studies, cross-cultural communication, and the teaching of language and literature so that they can analyze, innovate and create appropriate strategies to address them.
- To provide opportunities for teachers to increase their capacity for critical analysis and synthesis and to apply these abilities in the pursuit of excellence in their profession.

The students’ academic standing is evaluated at the end of each semester. To stay in the program, a student must have a GPA of 1.75 or better.
