LAWANEN
From the Darangan epic, the IPAG adapts and reconstructs in
dance-music and drama the most controversial chapter in the abduction of
the Maranao Princess Lawanen. Women and tribal issues have been incorporated
in this latest work that will premiere February 26 and 27 at the MSU-IIT
gym in Iligan.

1998-99 Season offerings
IPAG features signature dance-music productions for its 1998-99 repertory
season this year.
The Guild celebrates its 22nd Theater Season starting in April 1999
highlighted by a tour of Manila accompanying its commissioned works
for the International Congress of Midwives, May 22 to 27, at the Philippine
International Convention Center.
IPAG premieres its latest neo-ethnic dance-story from the Maranao epic
Darangan, "Lawanen"
in Febraury 26 and 27.
A
remounting of the musicale "Datu Matu" is set in the middle of next year.
Local and regional tours also present Centennial-related dance and music
concerts.
A recital of new dance works will the 1999
Summer Performing Arts workshops at the MSU-IIT. Dance and theater
arts workshops open in March this year.
The "Tales From Mindanao"
saga sets for regional and international tours. This same production has
represented the country in various performance
events abroad.
Intl Confab Commissions IPAG
The country hosts the International Congress of Midwives, last held
two years ago in Norway, in May 22 to 27 at the Philippine International
Convention Center in Manila.
To provide the presentations will be the IPAG that has created two full-length
productions specifically for this meet.
Handling the logistics for this congress is the Integrated Midwives
Association of the Philippines which has regularly commissioned the Guild
for production-related work since 1991.
IPAG presents a Filipiniana production and a "concept" concert with
the theme "Birth and Courtship" in May 22 and 26, respectively.
Artist-scholars named
Twenty five artist-scholars have been selected by the IPAG who will
enjoy privileges provided by the MSU-IIT for the 2nd sem, AY 1998-99. These
young artists are in the fields of dance, drama, music, technical theater,
and theater administration. They will have their stage debut in the coming
productions.
Benefits include free tuition, free book rentals, a monthly stipend,
and exemption from P.E. classes.

IN THE NEWS...
NCCA supports "Lawanen"
A grant from the National Commission for Culture and
the Arts will partially subsidize the production of the world premiere
of "Lawanen". The grant has been approved as a pheripheral thater
development project of Mindulani, Inc., the Mindanao Theater collective
efforts.
Caluen visits Iligan
Founding member and IPAG Associate Artistic Director
Ricardo Jorge S. Caluen was in Iligan recently on a visit after 6 years
in Toronto, Canada. Ricky was Associate Artistic Director until his migration
to North America in 1992. He has directed a number of hit plays in his
long stint with the Guild. Ricky was also part of the management team in
the institutionalization of the IPAG as a leading regional theater.
