IPAG enraptures the U.S.
15 standing ovations in 15 shows
For
10 weeks starting
last July 27, the Integrated Performing Arts Guild (IPAG)
jaunted to six
states and fifteen cities inviting goodwill and introducing the tri-people art
of Mindanao to over 60,000 audiences in Hawaii and the mainland U.S.
Two and a
half months, 15 full-feature, and 9 excerpted performances later, IPAG reveled
an audience as diverse as America. In its 15 full-feature performances, IPAG
received long standing ovations for all of them. The tour was appropriately
capped by a headline performance in the DC Dance Festival at the prestigious
Kennedy Center where, as the D.C. press reports, IPAG “easily stole the show.”
The IPAG
sojourn celebrated the Philippine Centenn ial
in America. The Hawaiian Filipino Centennial Commission,
the Washington D.C.-based Migrant Heritage Commission, the
Filipino American Community of South Puget Sound in Olympia, the
Philippine Heritage Foundation of North Carolina and various other American
institutions organized IPAG’s performances.
With the
performances came generous media exposure and goodwill. Rave reviews further
affirmed IPAG’s drawing power in the international stage.
After 5
full-feature shows in the islands of Kauai, Oahu, Maui, and Hawaii (and a guest
appearance at the Lapu-Lapu Awards in downtown Waikiki), IPAG enthralled
audiences in Olympia, Seattle, Los Angeles, Arlington, Washington D.C., Virginia
Beach, Durham-Raleigh, and the Fayetteville International Arts Festival.
The fest in
Fayetteville (home to Fort Bragg) is attended annually by over 70,000 people
representing more than 30 countries. In this 28th outing, the festival - ranked
among the top 20 events in the southeastern U.S. – top-billed IPAG highlighting
the Philippines as this year’s featured country. A special performance was
organized to fete honored guest newly-appointed Philippine Ambassador Willy Gaa.
Visibly in
praise of the performances in various occasions were numerous dignitaries, among
them, Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle, Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann, Senators Ron
Menor and Daniel Akaka, Congressman Neil Abercrombie, Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa,
Kauai Mayor Bryan Baptiste, Carson City Mayor Jim Dear, Former Chief Justice
Hilarion Davide, Jr., members of the Philippine diplomatic corps, and Gaa who
watched the IPAG twice.

IPAG opens 'Uwahig' in Iligan
The
mullti-media
traipse through the elemental landscape of postcolonial, postmodern,
war-stricken environmentally ravaged Mindanao, 'Uwahig' is set for
performances at the MSU-IIT CASS Rooftop Theatre. This post modern play weaves folklore in New
Theatre based on the Mindanao Indarapatra epic. It deconstructs the story of two
brothers who
defend the land against darkness. Interspersed in the narrative are the flood
legends. Images of contemporary representations of darkness (war, hunger,
evacuation, and environmental destruction) are shaped through digital images,
puppetry, masks, music, chants, chorus, and poetry. The play had its World
Premiere as Philippine entry in the UNESCO-International Theatre Institute 31st
Theatre Olympics of the Nations in Manila.
Steven P.C. Fernandez conceptualized, wrote, and directed the collaborative production
With Fernandez was a team from the IPAG that joined Mindanao artists Felimon Blanco and Boots Dumlao in
mounting this theatre 'piece de resistance' .
