IPAG in Taipei Festival
The
Integrated Performing Arts Guild (IPAG) returned successful representing the
Philippines in the prestigious
9th Taipei Arts Festival. IPAG performed
Uwahig on Oct. 27 and 28 in the “avant-garde” component at the
historic century-old Guting St. Avant Garde Theatre.
Two Standing-Room-Only audiences stayed to join
post-performance interaction. The responses were electric. The crowd gave a
standing ovation even after the open forum.
Uwahig stands out for its innovative treatment of folklore in new
symbolic language. Taiwan’s major papers and leading critics have heaped rave
reviews on IPAG’s experimental showcase.
IPAG is widely recognized for its innovations in Philippine Theatre.
Uwahig had its world premiere at the 31st UNESCO
International Theatre Institute Olympics at the Cultural Center of the
Philippines in 2006.
Plans are underway for IPAG to collaborate with Taiwan’s
leading avant-garde theatre director Wang Molin and his company to mount a new
treatment of Shakespeare’s Medea. This play plans to tour Beijing,
Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taipei, and Manila next year.
Joining IPAG’s company in the festival are
Dr. Steven P.C. Fernandez, DFA (Director and Playwright), Melvin Pascubillo,
Leilani M. Fernandez, Amado Guinto, Kenn Erwin Velasquez, Phoebe Jean Gayanelo,
Jetaime Yamut, Vicmar Paloma (Designer), Felimon Blanco (Co-Choreographer), and
Company Manager Stanley Perry C. Fernandez.

'Tales' draws more and
more kudos
Pearl Year Celebrations continue

Tales From Mindanao,
the long-running dance theatre production of the IPAG, continues to bring in the
goodwill for its thousands of audiences nationwide. Tales’ 3rd
leg opens at the Capitol University of Cagayan de Oro City with matinee and gala
performances on December 8. The production then travels to the Davao provinces
with shows in Mati, Panabo, Tagum, and Davao City until December 15.
This string of dance-vignettes of Mindanao lore traveled its 2nd leg
last month with much applauded performances at the Assumpta Theatre of
Assumption Antipolo and the Bro. Donato Center for the Performing Arts of La
Salle Greenhills. In August, Tales completed 23 performances in various
Manila and Davao City schools.
Since its premiere in 1991, Tales can claim to be the country’s most
performed dance-theatre production of the most-traveled integrated arts company.

Theatre book off the press
The test edition of Making Theatre: The Craft of the
Stage will be available soon. This textbook (written by Dr. Steven P.C.
Fernandez, DFA and published by the IPAG) centers its subject on creating
theatre in the regions. According to the book’s author, Making Theatre
fills in the need to create productions in conditions with the most inadequate
of resources, in art, science, and business.
Most theatre books available teach our budding practitioners well but in
situations where infrastructure is absent, or audience is apathetic. Focus is
centered on making use of available resources including physical spaces,
artists, organizers, technology, and their use to transform local subjects and
aesthetics to the stage. Besides sharing techniques of directing, the book
includes parts on how to organize, produce shows in various genres, sell, and
appropriately transcreate indigenous materials for theatre.
This test edition will be used by the Stagecraft classes of the author. Copies
are however available for sale at the introductory price of P250.00.

Mr. C visits IPAG rehearsals
Music
maestro Ryan Cayabyab was in town and paid IPAG a visit while the company was
rehearsing before it left for Taiwan. Ryan, who was guest of IPAG director Tibo,
earlier auditioned potential Maranao singers for a band he was planning to form.
Ryan is a friend of Tibo. They were acquaintances since their high school days
at the U.P. in Diliman.
