IPAG celebrates 30
years
The Pearl: hard, lustrous, valuable.
The pearl is also the symbol of 30 years. This year IPAG celebrates its Pearl
Anniversary. Thirty years of the performing arts, in the performing arts.
Despite
the bumpy road and the many detours, IPAG has firmly settled its place in
Philippine Theatre, Dance, and the Arts. Its recognition as a major performing
arts company is widely acknowledged. Its productions have been acclaimed in over
100 cities worldwide. It is the Philippines’ most traveled repertory company
creating productions in dance, drama, recitals, revues, performance art, and
multi-media.
This Season, IPAG’s 30th year will be fittingly celebrated with an
honor’s night that commemorates its 30 fruitful years. Set August 10 (date of
its founding in 1978 by Ligaya Fernando-Amilbangsa and Steven P.C. Fernandez),
this affair honors the artists and workers who have propped up cultural work
with the IPAG. Excerpts of its notable productions will be staged in
multi-media.
Citations will be given capped by the Sir Ruffy Ignacio – Niaga Award
that shall be received by a distinguished IPAG alumnus whose contributions have
been most significant. (Only one other award has been given, and that was to the
late Dennis Orellana, founding Visual Artist and originator of the Maranao text
lettering and the IPAG corporate seal and logo.)
With the anniversary will be exhibits, performances around the MSU-IIT campus,
fora, and the revue of productions that honors IPAG artists, supporters, and its
community of audiences.
Keep posted for the specific schedules.

'New Theatre' incites post-show gab
Uwahig
and
Of Cocks and Roces
did not end with the curtain calls. As was the practice of IPAG, a
post-performance dialogue with the audience was held after every show, all 12 in
the plays' 3-week run.
And more often than not, the plays elicited more questions
than answers, a part quite expected by the creators of these two Post Modern
plays.
The confusions generated by these two 'Theatres of Semiotics' (as termed by
their director-playwright Steven P.C. Fernandez) extended to discussions in the
classrooms and in the faculty offices after long discussions in the dialogues.
IPAG has in many occasions introduced innovative works (beyond the conventional)
that have incited the minds and hearts of its viewers.
Clearly amazed and frozen in their seats, the audiences reveled in their new
theatre experience while trying to make sense out of the images and sounds the
productions barraged them. In the end, it was the experience that counted as the
terms of conventional theatre were thrown out of the theater's windows.
