An Lim Wins Poetry Contest Anew
Prolific poet and fictionist Jaime an Lim, professor of Literature at the MSU-IIT, won first place in this year's Philippine Panorama Literary Contest. His winning poem is entitled: "November the Second."
An Lim has won practically all the major literary prizes in the country today, in poetry, fiction, and story for children. One of the country's leading literary critics, he has been published here and abroad. An Lim is currently the co-Director of the Iligan National Writers Workshop.
"Tales From Mindanao" opens its regional tours with two performances at the San Isidro College in Malaybalay, Bukidnon in December 15.
Other performances are scheduled in the Visayas and Mindanao in the early part of next year.
Iligan Arts Council Consolidates Resources in Workshop
The Iligan Arts Council conducted an Arts Management workshop attended by the different arts and culture leaders October 29 and 30. The workshop was intended to strengthen the management capabilities of Iligan's artist leaders and coordinate the various art activities in the city. It was also a venue to develop strategies in sustaining art and culture efforts in the city.
Facilitating the workshop were art administrators from the Cultural Center of the Philippines led by Oliver "Bong" Patino.
The Arts Council is currently headed by Amy Noel-Francisco. The city's cultural affairs officer is Anita Sescon.
Iligan Workshop Alumni Win Awards
In upholding the credibility and prestige of the Iligan National Writers Workshop, the graduates of the INWW continue to reap plaudits in national competitions. The following have won major literary prizes this year:
Palanca: John Iremil Teodoro (INWW Fellow, 1995), first, playwriting; Sid Gomez Hildawa (INWW Fellow, 1995), 3rd prize, poetry.
Philippine Panorama Literary Contest: Jaime an Lim (INWW Director), first, poetry; Isidoro M. Cruz (INWW Fellow, 1995), 2nd, poetry; John Iremil Teodoro (INWW Fellow, 1995) 3rd, poetry; Gad Sy Lim (INWW Fellow, 1996), 2nd, fiction; Alic Sun Cua (INWW Fellow, 1997), 3rd, fiction.
National Book Award from Manila Critics Circle: Ricardo M. de Ungria (INWW panelist, 1996-97).
The Mindulani Congress scheduled last October 18-20 at the Marbella Hotel in Koronadal (Marbel), South Cotabato has scheduled the 1998 Mindanao theater Festival in June to September next year.
The festival is one of the major initiatives that Mindanao theater artists have pursued it their cultural agenda aimed at making Mindanao a dominant cultural foprce in the country. The congress also assessed the continuing efforts to strengthen the arts and culture movement in Mindanao. Among the major points discussed were the establishment of an academy in Mindanao in the following regions with their respective strenghts: West (repertory), South (Indigenous communities), East (Advocacy).
The 1998 Mindanao Festival has the theme: Mindanao to the World, the World in Mindanao. Components of the festival will include the Summer Institute, International Workshops, Circuit Festivals, and the Festival Proper when international groups shall also be invited.
Dramaturg Nestor Horfilla was elected Festival Director while Amy Noel Francisco of the Iligan Arts Council the festival's chairperson.
Horfilla Heads NCCA Dramatic Arts Committee
Dramaturg Nestor Horfilla, Director of the Davao-based Kaliwat theater Collective was elected to head the National Dramatics Committee of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.
The Committee recently held its congress in Iloilo City attended by some of the regional leaders of theater in the country. The Congress assessed its 7-year development plans until the year 2000. Various plans of the regions were presented and discussed.
Ten representatives from Mindanao attended. elected to the Executive Committee besides Horfilla were Sunnie Noel (Sining Kambayoka-West sector), Louis Curada (Theresian Ensemble-East sector) and Puring Trinidad (Tagum children's theater-South sector). They replace outgoing vice chairmen Steven P.C. Fernandez (IPAG-West sector) whose term ends in May, and Melvin Lamanilao (Kaliwat-South sector).
IPAG will represent the country in the 1998 International Theater Festival of the American Association of Community Theater (AACT) in Michigan. It will also tour Canada and Europe anew as part of its 1998 World Tours that will start in the third week of May.

"Datu Matu" is IPAG Centennial Offering
A national tour and other activities
mark the celebration of the Centennial by the IPAG. Perhaps the only Muslim
play about the Moro-American wars in the 1900's, "Datu Matu" performs in
a national tour in November-December 1997 and January-March 1998 with the
CCP Cultural Exchange Program. The dance-musicale celebrates the significant
contributions of the Philippine Muslims in the country's quests for nationhood.
SINING KAMBAYOKA is GAWAD CCP Awardee
Sining Kambayoka based in the Mindanao State University's main campus was recently awarded the Gawad CCP para sa Sining Pangtanghalan. Kambayoka is well-known for popularizing its folk theater format adapted from the Maranao song-and-dance form, the bayok. In the mid-70's it has produced such a wide-ranging influence to direct the future routes of other theater companies in the region.
Frank Rivera is the Kambayoka founder. It is now headed by its artistic director Sunnie Noel.
