director, playwright, performing artist, writer, animateur, musician, composer, comic artist, teacher, and a
student of culture.
is Founder-Artistic Director of the Integrated Performing Arts Guild (IPAG). For 26 years, he has
established the IPAG with its respected position today as a leading integrated arts company,
perhaps the only professional company outside of Metro Manila with a regular in-base and touring season. In his relentless drive to provide a
professional regional theater for the South, he has developed a regular pool of home-grown talents who work in fulfilling performance and
theater-education efforts in building a large nationwide audience. IPAG performances and programs reach an average of 50,000 audiences per season
participating in over sixty touring performances and advocacy programs. IPAG may claim to be the country’s most traveled repertory company today.
Besides being primarily responsible for the active cultural life of Iligan City, he is recipient of various
fellowships here and abroad. He observed and trained in theater in the U.S., Sweden, and China. His works are internationally acclaimed and have been
extensively produced all over the country and in major cities in the Netherlands, France, Austria, United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal, Korea, Taiwan, and
Singapore. With the IPAG, he has led eight international tours representing the Philippines in major festivals in Europe and Asia. His original plays,
music and dance theater works that mostly highlight Southern Philippine cultures and which figure prominently in Philippine Arts and Letters have won
national awards and have been recognized with national endowments and critical acclaim. Recently, he led the IPAG to a Grand Prize award in the 13th
International Folkloric Festival in Port-Sur-Saone, France.
He has published numerous essays on Philippine culture and arts and his papers read in international and national
conferences. In 1999, he observed Japanese Theater under a grant from the Japan Foundation. Professor, Resident Director, and Resident
Playwright-panelist of the Iligan National Writers Workshop, he holds a Master’s Degree in Philippine Studies (major in the Humanities) from the
University of the Philippines and is completing a Doctor of Fine Arts degree in the De La Salle University. Fernandez is featured in the CCP
Encyclopedia of the Arts. He is also listed in the Cambridge International Biographic Centre’s 2001 edition of Who’s Who in the World (1st edition)
and 2000 Outstanding Intellectuals of the 21st Century (1st edition). A forthcoming review of his works will appear in the Harvard Asian Quarterly,
America’s most prestigious journal on Asia.
