Riding on the momentum of the 33rd
Season, the 34th Season has opened with a line-up of
in-base productions and road shows,
workshops, and short-term courses in preparation for the proposed
Institute of Cultural Resource Management and Development (ICRMD),
and international collaborations.
Performances
Two new one-act plays premiere in September under a director's
and playwright's apprenticeship program. These plays, products
of playwriting workshops, test their acceptability and prospects
for longer runs and road shows.
In a new take, Sarimanok, the first IPAG signature
dance production, restages in February 2012 under an updated
postmodern treatment. Sarimanok with a string of
acclamations catapulted IPAG to national fame in the 1980s.
Four other productions are in the repertoire of road shows:
Uwahig, Suhi, SugaTula, and favorites Tales
From Mindanao and Tatlo sa Isa.
Uwahig, a deconstruction
of the Indarapatra epic, opens IPAG's touring run on May 18 at
the Xavier U. Tales will be the featured performance in
the founders celebrations of the Cebu Normal University on June
23 when other performances have been set in Cebu.
IPAG awaits the confirmation of dates for nationwide
performances that have been set for these productions including
international presentations in Asia and Europe.
Workshops and courses
The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) has
approved a grant to facilitate the establishment of the ICRMD,
the first in the Southern Philippines to offer certificate and
degree courses in Performance and Cultural Studies. Currently,
the IPAG-ARM that supervises training activities is the unit
tasked to implement workshops.
Using its experience in producing dance for the theatre, IPAG
opens its summer Dance Workshop on April 13 (Mon). The workshop
culminates on May 7 with a recital.
It complements through its expertise NCCA education programs
like the Summer Institute for Cultural Workers (April 29 - May
9), the Cultural Education Program (May), the Iligan National
Writers Workshop (May 23-25), and Sulat Dula, the
playwriting workshop.
Other courses have been scheduled including a Director's
Apprenticeship Program and lecture-workshops in transcreation,
the Study of the Humanities, and Stagecraft.
Embedded in the IPAG training are continuing courses in
performance to enhance the craft of its applicants and would-be
artists. |
