COMPANY
CALL The company prepares for performance.
Performers warm up and outdo each other as in a Prologue.
EARTH,
WIND, FIRE and WATER The
elements of Life merge with Man. This composition pulsates with earthly
gestures inspired by Mindanao movements.
"THE
ABDUCTION OF PRINCESS LAWANEN"from
the DARANGEN
One of the more
intriguing episodes of the darangen
, the Maranao epic, Mindanao's
counterpart of the Ramayana. A romance of heroes, villains, wars, and royalty.
THE
LEGEND OF MARIA CRISTINA FALLS A
legend of the Maria Cristina Falls, Mindanao’s most famous waterfalls in
Iligan City. This dance narrative tells us of a Rajah’s unbridled lust
for one woman.
A NEW
TALE OF SARIMANOK Sarimanok’s
disobedience of the laws of Bayang Lawa leads to her tragic end. This vignette
is a deconstruction of a storyline adapted from the legendary Maranao bird,
a symbol of wealth and prestige.
LOVE
AND DEATH AT MUDDAS (a
TauSug story) Muddas (now Siasi in the Sulu islands) is setting to a heart-rending
tale, a forbidden affair between a Christian soldier and a young TauSug
lady, strictly taboo by Islamic custom. The graceful waves of the sea,
a storm that lashes the sea’s calm ("Sisabros"), and the town wharf are
fitting backdrops to the tale that ends with the lilting melody of the
sad love song "Susulan Tawi-Tawi" (Tawi-Tawi Beach).
THE TALE OF THE BIRD AND FISHOnce upon a time, a bird made friends with a fish. Their friends in the forest were happy too. But men arrived an altered their homes.
PANGALAY Stillness in motion. The body and the hands capture the graceful undulations of the sea. The dancer seems frozen in a still pose and mask-like expression. This is the Philippines' closest claim o classical dancing.
