STAGE MANAGEMENT

Organizing your work is paramount in the theater. Work is always undertaken with a production in mind. No natural talent can substitute for good planning. Effective organization coupled with careful forward-planning can result in impressive performances.

Again, let us not forget that the theater is integrated work. It is collaborative. Teamwork is essential. Talent alone will not make a good production.

We distinguish between Stage Management and Theater Management (as we have earlier studied). Observe how Stage Management interfaces with the theater organization. The company (theater organization) takes care of such business as marketing, administrative operations, the securing of venues, and budgeting. The Stage Management team works and concentrates on the production at hand.

The Stage Manager plays a very crucial role in the mounting of a production. He/She is the key person who realizes a director’s vision in the director’s recreation of a material.
We now sample a Stage Management’s Chart and see how this chart distributes work.
